Managing Active Research

Research Computing and the Smithsonian Libraries work together to provide a variety of solutions for active management of research data.  In addition to the Smithsonian-provided solutions, there are a number of community-based repositories that may be appropriate.

Publishing Research

The Smithsonian Scholarly Press publishes research and other scholarly and educational contributions authored by Smithsonian curators and researchers. Smithsonian Libraries work with researchers to assign DOIs and submit their publications to Smithsonian Research Online (SRO).  The Smithsonian currently publishes over 2500 publications per year.

Digital Preservation of Research Data

Research Computing and Smithsonian Libraries are working together with Smithsonian Archives to ensure that research data at the Smithsonian is preserved for the long term.  The Smithsonian Archives performs records management for the Institution and provides preservation and digital curation services for paper and born-digital records.  As the majority of research data is now born-digital, appraising, curating and ensuring that data is in the appropriate preservation formats is critical to the long term viability of the data.
