Summary Description:
During the 1992 campaign, Sánchez and Badilla identified discolorations in the profiles of two looter pits (#24 and #24a), which appeared to be grave fills. Consequently they opened a 3.5 x 2.25 m test in which they discovered two funerary features with human remains. The earliest of these (Feature 1) was a shallow (0.8-1.1 m) sub-rectangular grave cut into bedrock. On the eastern side it was disturbed by the cylindrical shaft of Feature 2. Four 20 cm circular holes dug through the floor of Feature 1 to a depth of 15-25 cm may be post molds for a super-structure or for furniture made of perishable materials. The human remains were shoved to one side when the shaft of Feature 2 intruded dislodging three individuals in this grave. The most intact skeleton belonged to an adult male, estimated by Janine Pliska to have been 18 -20 yr. old. It is likely that this individual was originally a primary flexed interment. Partial remains of another adult and an infant may represent earlier burials disturbed when Individual 3 was placed in the grave. Grave goods comprised: hammered gold plaques, jaguar and puma teeth perforated through the roots, Spondylus shell tubular beads – perhaps an apron or shirt - and pottery incense burners.The only intact ceramic found in Feature 1 were two red painted incense burners of the Espabé type of Luís Sánchez (1975). Espabé sherds were frequent in the C horizon of Operation 2, associated with Tonosí polychrome sherds. Alain Ichon (1980) found similar incense burners in the Tonosí valley associated with Tonosí polychromes.
