- Operation 1 was laid down in 1992 by Luis A. Sanchez and Adrian Badilla as a 2 x 5 m unit located on a flat area of Cerro Juan Diaz 30 m from the La Villa River. The prominent feature (Feature 1) was an ellipsoidal accumulation of sherds, lithics, shells and animal bones about 1.1 m on the longer axis, and about 0.2 m in depth. It appears to have formed rapidly. Among the abundant sherds were many vessels that could be partially restored. It does not seem to have been much disturbed after deposition. A fragment of metate made of volcanic tuff was recovered in addition to grooved stones interpreted as weights for fishing nets. Abundant vertebrate remains comprisedf fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals,. The pottery belongs to the Cubita ceramic group, which dates between about 500 and 750 CE. in 1984, the original excavation was expanded to 6 x 13 m. Olman Solis was in charge of this excavation. He was assisted by Irina Ruiz. Solis found that the original Feature 1 formed part of a larger deposit ("Stratum B" [Estrato B]), which formed in a slight depression on flat terrain. It would appear that it represented the refuse associated with a dwelling. Underneath the original Feature 1, several holes were found in 1992, cutting into bedrock, They formed a quasi semi-circular pattern and may refer to an earlier dwelling, which was covered by Stratum B, which is consistently about 20 cm thick. The matrix is mostly fine silt and ash, the latter more frequent in the lower sector. The layer above Stratum B, 'Stratum A', consists of a dark humic soils without obvious differentiation by depth. It contained a large number of bird bones that had been cut for use as artifacts. Many of the bones belonged to boobies (Sula spp.) -- marine species that may well have nested at that time on a rocky islet called Isla Villa, which lies just off the coast about 12 km to the south east.
