Feature 94

Primary Title:
Feature 94
Summary Description:
Not described originally as a Type C grave by Luis Sanchez, Feature 94 is nonetheless a shaft grave, which was clearly cut by a stone-walled oven (Feature 88). Therefore it surely belongs to the same group. Feature 94 had a roundish shaft about 1 m deep and 1.3 m in diameter. The principal occupant (Individual 36) - adult, sex not yet determined - was placed face-up in a flexed position. A shell ornament shaped like long-tailed frog was found in association. It is probably made of Strombus. Scattered around and below the body were three broken ceramic vessels and a broken legged metate. One vessel is a large bowl painted with a stylized crocodile design on the interior (Ciruelo Black-on-Red type). It was “killed” by a sharp blow. A smaller bowl is decorated in black with a stylized turtle design on the interior (also Ciruelo Black-on-Red). The third vessel is large while-slipped bowl with a black-painted circumferential design on the interior (Guábilo Black on Cream). These vessels were broken intentionally and the sherds scattered under and around the body. When Individual 36 was laid in the feature, it disturbed another Individual (38) underneath. Twenty-seven mother-of-pearl plaques and pendants, a bead made out of Prunus sapotilla (a marine gastropod), a small folded gold bead, and six Spondylus artifacts were recovered in association with Individual 36. A human tooth AMS dentine date of 1500 ± BP was obtained (cal 450-640 CE) (Beta-147878) for Individual 36 (the primary flexed burial). Flecks of charcoal around this body were dated to 1380 ± 80 BP (cal 550-800 CE) (I-8638). Ninety-seven Pinctada mazatlanica (mother-of-pearl) artifacts, cut into geometric shapes, were found near Individual 38, together with two Spondylus beads and a modified Tegula pellisserpentis shell. Charcoal flecks found around this body gave a date of 1570 ± 80 BP (cal 340-660 CE). The tooth collagen date for Individual 36 is considered more reliable since carbon fractionattion was determined empirically. It accords well with current knowledge about the chronology of the Cubitá style and Ciruelo Red-on-Black bowls from the Azuero Peninsula and the Pearl Islands.
