Project Name:
Conchero 3, Pedro Gonzalez Island, Pearl Island Archipelago
Project Name (Abbreviation):
Conchero 3
Project Description:
In 2007 some Precolumbian sites were located to the west of the modern community of Pedro Gonzalez on a low plateau looking over the coast. The most informative received the denomination "Conchero 3" or PG-L-3. A 2x1 m test pit was excavated by Diana Carvajal and Alexandra Lara Kraudy. Sediments contained mostly marine shell. But animal bone was frequent. Sherd material corresponds to the Cubita pottery horizon of the Gran Cocle sequence. The maximum time range of deposition at the 2-sigma level, based on three radiocarbon determinations is cal 660-980 cal CE. Statistically speaking, dates are somewhat later than would be expected for the pottery found in this shell-bearing midden (600-750 cal CE). The three intercept dates, however -- 660, 670 and 670 cal CE -- are consistent with other evaluations of the antiquity of this pottery from the Azuero Peninsula where some vessels may have originated. All dates were all run on charred material found within the midden. Many of the decorated pottery varieties have been reported at Playa Venado ("Venado Beach") located at the western entrance of the Panama Canal.
