Note: Object Description
STRI Excel: Gold sheathing (envoltura) Catálogo de INAC: 55817 Numero de laboratorio: PV-343-97 Fragment of very thin gold sheathing that is roughly c-shaped in form. It is very golden in color. It is compressed at both long edges to conform to what is likely to be rounded core material. The metal was burnished in place over this underlying object and shows matte surface as a result.. 0.0 g in wt. (does not register on scale) 0.05 mm in thickness. Fragment is 10mm wide and ~37 mm long Underlying object appears to have been rounded in profile as well as in circumference but the other aspects of the underlying object-- shape, material, etc. - are unknown.
Note: Research Notes
MCI 5/06 M1 (ICP,EDS)
Note: Condition Review
Metal is inherently weak due to its thinness and is easily torn with handling, There is a large missing fragment - as much as one half of original or as little as one third --from the two ends. There are numerous short cracks along the two long edges that appear to have resulted when the metal sheathing came off object. There are some small losses at the edges of cracks. No visible tarnish.
Note: Housing Notes
Rebagged in polyethylene ziplock bag with Tyvek tag insert. The object was stabilized inside the bag in a purpose-built ethafoam cavity-mount.

Note: none visible
Technique: Fabrication Method
Hammered-Sheathing Note: It appears to be one continuous sheet (the two short ends that would have completed the piece are missing). The metal was burnished over the underlying form to produce pleating and overlap along the long edges as it conformed to the shape of the object below. The underlying object probably was quite coarse and grainy at the surface, producing a matte finish on the gold's interior surface. The top and bottom edges (long edges) are finished but do not join each other and and do not provide evidence for the remaining shape of the underlying object.
Technique: Joinery
Note: none visible due to loss of the ends
Treatment: Conservation Performed
Surface cleaned/degreased with acetone on cotton swab
