Note: Object Description
Open back cast pendant of a cougar with dot in ring eyes, raised ears, open mouth and long tail that curls at the tip. The suspension loops are present on the front two paws. The surface was likely enriched through depletion gilding as it appears gold with a coppery and black mineralized interior.
Note: Owner Accession
Gold plated figurine ornaments from Prov. of Veraguas, Panama, collected y Sr. Juan Gratacos, Panama, and from him purchased (Order no.10987) through Dr.J.A Mason. No data on exact site or conditions of finding. All cast in molds and thinly plated
Note: Research Notes
Accession records specify "no info on site." Juan Gratacos, however, did send Lothrop site info on objects at Peabody from Veraguas.
Note: Condition Review
Two pieces. The body is mostly intact except for a loss in the back PR foot and the tail is separate. The surface is largely covered in green corrosion and underneath the gold surface layer there appears to be black corrosion.
Note: Follow-up Notes
The cross section at the broken off tail would be ideal for SEM-EDS if the metal structure is still intact (may be too mineralized)
