Note: Object Description
Cast double animal beads on a necklace composed of five cast double animal figures with open backs for insets and 23 tubular beads. The animals have curled snouts, ball in ring eyes, and various spiral and triangle decorations. They are attached at the center by a cast wire rod and they each have a suspension loop between two legs. Six of the animals have modern ivory inserts while four are empty. Each animal has a single hole on the bottom of the setting, perhaps as a means of securing the inset. (entire necklace weighs 64g)
Note: Owner Accession
Panama. Purchased from Philip L. Dade by Dr Arthur Sackler
Note: Research Notes
Reference in Dade-Dockstader correspondence: (1966) Inserts are reproductions. Dade believes that the gold beads would have belonged to the necklace but he had to get them from his partner. From El Hatillo, mound 6, graves 1-2
Note: Bibliographic References
Dade's correspondence with Dockstader refers to this necklace and indicates that the ivory insets are not original.
