There are two deep tangential cracks through the fish-hook, one across the outside of the bend (where the shaft begins to curve) and one at the top of the eye (where it begins to curve).

The surface is very irregular, which may result from casting. The cracks in the bends may be from stress corrosion cracking caused by stresses during forming
