This is a fragment of a pendant and it is fractured at thin end, exposing the underlying ceramic core. There are 2 areas of loss at the bulbous end of the pendant. The loss is apparent both in the sheathing and the surface of the ceramic core beneath. There is also a break in the sheathing in the concave surface of the ring pattern (3rd ring from the bulbous end). The gold sheathing on either side of the drilled hole in the pendant appears torn and irregular at the edges. The ceramic on the inside of the drill hole appears cracked and fractured with some small losses, but the pendant is otherwise stable. There is a reddish granular deposit on the surface of the gold, which is likely soil from the burial.

Technique: Fabrication Method
Hammered-Sheathing Note: Fired clay core, sheathed in gold foil. Foil is applied in 2 strips with the seam running laterally along the length of the bead on concave and convex sides. Perforation goes between flat sides. 22 mm from the bulbous end of the bead has been decorated w/ a linear banded pattern; 4 concentric rings form the border at the bulbous end of the pendant, followed by 2 rows of banded rickrack. On top of this is 4 concentric rings and a third band of rickrack and then 4 more concentric ring. The hole is approx. 2 mm in diameter and has been pierced entirely through the sheathing and the ceramic, approx. 16 mm from the bulbous end. At either tapered end of the pendant, the gold foil has been compressed against the surface of the pendant and against the foil itself.
Technique: Joinery
Note: The 2 sheets of gold sheathing have been joined longitudinally down the length of the pendant. The sheets overlap (overlap by about 0.5 mm).
Treatment: Conservation Performed
Note: Surface cleaned/degreased with acetone on cotton swab.
