225838c: second of two thin (0.01" thick) polygonal plaque/ornaments (the one in worse condition). The plaque is undecorated and there are four punch holes in two rows at the top edge punched from front (numbered side) to back. 12.1g
Note: Owner Accession
Excavated by Mr. and Mrs. Neville A. Harte in 1951
Note: Research Notes
Found in grave of child. Gorgets were found over hips of child. Made from leg or wing bones of gulls, other from orange and white shell beads, originally strung on human hair. Three gold plaques found on the child's chest (originally sewn on clothing).. one undecorated, other with embossed circle, and the third in "cocle" style with embossed hybrid creature (this plaque now at Dumbarton Oaks) (From Lothrop 1956)
Note: Bibliographic References
Documented in article Lothrop, Samuel K. "Jewelry form the Panama Canal Zone," in Archaeology (1956) Vol.9(1) pg.34
Note: Condition Review
Fragmentary. There are large cracks throughout the plaque and broken pieces that have been reattached with cerex patches and a clear adhesive. Feels light and brittle. Layers appear delaminating in broken areas.
Note: Follow-up Notes
Special. Because the object is so fractured, there are areas in the center where cleavage of the surface layers have exposed the interior metal that appears pinkish. It would be interesting to analyze the difference in composition. Only problem is the presence of cerex patches and adhesive that may cause difficulty with charging in the ESEM
