Note: Research Notes
NMAI archives: Box OC 32, Folder 13 contains Packing list "Catalogue July 1924, Archaeology, Cocle Province, 13/1802, 23, Bloodstone and gold ornament (Nose Ring?)" No reference to grave #.
Note: Bibliographic References
Lothrop mentions Verrills excavations at El Cano in his Sitio Conte manuscript but says that Verrill goes to Panama in 1925 (a year after the records indicate Verrill gave cocle objects to the museum??). Condition report on file. Echoes of the Drums 1978. Negative #41634
Note: Condition Review
Good condition. One of the gold sheathing caps is loose and was stored separately in a polyethylene bag. There is a small chip in the stone near one of the ends.
Note: Follow-up Notes
Loose sheathing could easily fit into SEM and would be interesting to see interior surface morphology

Hammered-Sheathing Note: The sheathing is sheet that has been formed over the stone substrate. There are wrinkles and folds on the interior edge of the sheathing indicating that pressure was applied to mold it over the shape of the stone. The interior of the sheathing retains an unfinished, rough texture (from the stone?)
Technique: Finishing
Note: High polish on exterior of sheathing. Interior is rough and unfinished
