Note: Object Description
Open back cast pendant with all details made in the wax model. The surface appears enriched as it is gold colored while the interior is coppery. There is some visible porosity and pits from casting. A suspension loop is present in the open back and there is a lump that may be a casting flaw
Note: Owner Accession
3 metal objects (one of gold and two of copper gilt) from Chiriqui, province of Panama, South of boundary of Costa Rica. Purchased from C.H. Soar Order # 57337. $55.00. The above were forwarded from San Francisco by the Dr. Walter Hough, and are excellent examples of the metal work of the ancient peoples
Note: Research Notes
Museum purchased from Henry Soar in 1915. No reference to who excavated them. Cannot yet find info on Soar
Note: Bibliographic References
Exhibit Hall 23 9-17-74
Note: Condition Review
The object is whole but there is evidence of cracking and corrosion in several locations. A large crack is visible through the "wings" near the head of the pendant. The surfaces are heavily scratched, revealing in some areas the copper colored alloy below. Likely cleaned in the past as only a very small amount of green corrosion present. Black corrosion also visible in some areas. Adhesive-like material visible at attachment of elbows to body and in crack of headress at back
Note: Follow-up Notes
XRF: Analyze the sides of the wings, body, and suspension ring. Possible candidate for X-radiography as the flat headress/wings has interesting join/crack
Note: Analysis Recommendations
XRF X-ray radiograph
